Star Wolf Mercenaries is a Turn-Based Strategy game featuring Turn-Based Tactics management. You command a group of mercenaries lead by the infamous team Star Wolf doing various mercenary work, beholden by a tun-based ground combat, switching between player and enemy phases. Similar to games like X-COM and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, the player positions characters into strategic positions, engaging enemies in a shootout, catching them off-guard as they traverse in their own turns, or even protect allies. Each character is defined by their class, from being an expert in gunfights to controlling drones, with multiple licenses available to put to a character. Along the way, Wolf can upgrade the Colossus Fang with parts to help out with the missions, recruit possible candidates for additional mercenary work, and even chart the more dangerous areas beyond the Lylat System.

Two years after Star Fox: Assault, team Star Fox received a distress call just beyond the borders of the Lylat System. As The Great Fox approached however, ominous Space Clouds suddenly swallowed the starship whole. Rescue arrived, seeing a broken ship and the crew injured - but more importantly, Fox McCloud was missing. After recovering from his injuries, Peppy Hare insisted on sending help to the Outer Lylat Border, and in his desperation, he was ready to call for a certain band of ruthless mercenaries. It was a good thing Star Wolf just recently procured a rundown and abandoned battleship from a job. And so he and his team (with a new recruit!) gets hired to look for Fox and for him, figure out what got the fox.

  • Justified Tutorial: The tutorial mission involves retrieving stolen supplies from space bandits. Said mission introduces mechanics, the newcomer, and the whole mercenary job system. It also gives the team a derelict ship which Wolf likes.
  • Renovating the Player Headquarters: Wolf is given the opportunity to upgrade the Colossus Fang with facilities and overall better aesthetics and shielding. A fully-renovated Colossus Fang is required for one of the endings.
  • Space Clouds: It's what gets the Star Fox team in the prologue. Later revealed to be a test blast for an electronic storm.

Star Wolf

  • Cool Starship: The Colossus Fang. Doubles as the Player Headquarters. It starts as a bare bones ship, which is effective in getting to the Outer Lylat Border without raising alarms. It can then be upgraded with facilities, becoming something like Star Wolf's own Great Fox. Of course, Peppy Hare overseas it.

Wolf O'Donnell

The Leader

Default Class: Enforcer

Unique Trait: Wolf Chief. When there are allies nearby, he and any nearby allies gain bonus damage, accuracy and defense. When upgraded, he can survive a fatal shot with 1% of his HP left once.

Leon Powalski

Sneaky Assassin

Default Class: Shadow-Op

Unique Trait: Camo. Lets him activate Stealth for free once, regardless of class (becomes a separate command on classes with built-in Stealth). When upgraded, increase the movement range while under Stealth and always deal critical damage when performing Stealth Attack.

Panther Caroso

Gallant Fighter

Default Class: Sniper

Unique Trait: Rose Assault. Gain an extra turn for attacking when an enemy is defeated (only occurs once per turn). When upgraded, mark an enemy with a rose if they survive an attack, making them receive increased damage and their likeliness to get hit.

Rex Raccoon

Explosive Expert

Default Class: Demo

Unique Trait: Spare Pockets. Have 3 additional item slots. When upgraded, gain additional 3 item slots.

  • Bag of Holding: His unique trait gives him 3 more additional slots for his bandolier, and upgrading him also grants another 3.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He only goes up to Wolf's waist but he starts as a Demo - meaning he is carrying a massive rocket launcher! And there's the fact that he can carry more than most of the characters.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Downplayed. Rex has been part of the team, but it's only for a year. He engages in their banter but it's clear he's still new to the gang (and them new to his musings).
  • Stuff Blowing Up: His expertise in the team.

Mercenaries

Snow Vulpa

Aid in Training

Default Class: Medic

Unique Trait: Reserves. Healing done to allies is 25% more and has bonus 25% shields. When upgraded, he revives allies at full health.

  • But Thou Must!: Wolf cannot not recruit him, even if he agrees with him not cut out for mercenary work. Peppy tells him that they should take any potential hands they could find, especially when he's the only medic they could have. Notable that this is the only time in the game where Wolf ponders on recruiting someone or not.
  • Cowardly Lion: Is often nervous, but is ready to help people despite the dangerous situation.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: He is a mandatory recruit in the first job within the Outer Lylat Border. He is one of the civilians being accosted by the local ruffians, but swallowed his fear to take care of the injured using with what he learned. He eventually got roped into the combat, before being asked to join, which he does so reluctantly.
  • You Remind Me of X: Wolf jokes that he reminds him of Fox, except wet between the ears.

Crusher

Giant SharpClaw

Default Class: Sentinel

Unique Trait: Heavy Set. Immune to incapacitation when moving. When upgraded, reduce damage when moving.

  • Last of His Kind: While not really the last of his kind, there are very few of his race left.

Eric Equus

One of the Fastest

Default Class: Scout

Unique Trait: Triathlete. Increased movement range and throwing range. When upgraded, wearing an Item Belt doesn't have a penalty.

Cornerian Army

Star Fox

  • Putting the Band Back Together: In some way, the story is about this.
  • Walking Spoiler: Especially with two of its members.

Peppy Hare

Decorated Veteran

Default Class: Enforcer

Unique Trait: Star Shooter. Support Fire, Oppressive Fire, and Overwatch have increased critical rate and damage. When upgraded, increase Support and Overwatch action points by 2.

  • Critical Hit Class: Whenever he performs a support attack, he has a high chance of dealing critical hit, with an increased damage at that. Upgrading his unique trait even increases the chance of doing it.
  • Mission Control: Unofficially becomes this for Star Wolf. At first Wolf has his disagreements but later on agrees to his wisdom. Collecting ROB64's parts and restoring it frees up Peppy to become a playable character.
  • Secret Character: The game can be finished without him being recruited as a field unit.

Enforcer

The pointman class. It is the "fighter" class, being a straightforward combat class with no frills. As they get skilled, they gain various support firing abilities that also help other units.

Shadow-Op

The stealth class. It is the "rogue" class, needing to go into Stealth to hide against enemies and ambush them.

Sniper

The ranged class. It is the "mage" class, wanting to be far away from the gunfight while prepping for a long-ranged shot with their sniper rifles.

Demo

The class capable of dishing out explosives. Most of their attacks affect multiple enemies, and they can easily damage armored enemies with their heavy weapons.

Sentinel

The tanking class. They want to be upfront, absorbing damage while giving back with their shotgun shells. They can also help out allies, defending them from damage.

Medic

The healing class. They can restore health, remove anomalies, resuscitate fallen allies, and even provide extra shielding and boosts.

Saboteur

The class that disrupts enemy machinery and weaponry while invisible. While not focused much on dealing damage, they are used for controlling the battlefield by dismantling weapons, shields, and other forms of disabling anomalies.

Drone Pilot

An off-combat class. They prefer to be away from the fights, controlling a drone instead. Drones can be used to scout forward and various tasks.

Scout

The fast-moving class. Scouts are lightly-armored, but they can move farther, leap farther, and are amply armed to tick off enemy numbers on the fly.

Telekinetic

A class capable of moving objects with their minds. They can use objects to damage enemies or protect allies. They can even move around bodies if needed.

Predator

The hunting class. They have access to sneaking, but also the tenacity of a fighter. Rather than ambushing from behind, they prefer to spook their enemies, demoralizing their prey before dealing their coup-de-grace.

Sapper

Engineer

Technopath

Striker-Op
